Russia Justifies Halt of Gas Supplies to Austria Over Dispute

Russia has justified its decision to halt gas supplies to Austria, citing a legal dispute between two companies. The Foreign Ministry said the reduction in supply was due to Austria’s failure to respect certain conditions.

In September 2022, an explosion at the Baltic Sea Nord Stream pipeline and a shutdown of the Yamal-Europe pipeline had reduced gas deliveries to Austria. However, Russia had stopped deliveries through the Yamal-Europe pipeline earlier that year.

An arbitration court awarded Austrian energy company OMV €230 million in damages from Russian giant Gazprom. But Gazprom responded by halting all supply to Austria.

Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer expressed concern over the impact on households during the winter months, but Russia maintains its decision is justified.
