Russia has launched its biggest drone attack against Ukraine, with over 900 drones fired during a three-night aerial bombardment campaign. The attack, which includes 355 drones on Sunday night, is part of an escalating bombing campaign that has dashed hopes for a breakthrough in efforts to end the 3-year-old war.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Russia’s actions are driven by “complete impunity” and have no significant military logic. The attacks come after Ukraine accepted a 30-day ceasefire in March, which Moscow effectively rejected.
The US President Donald Trump lashed out at Russian leader Vladimir Putin, saying he has gone “crazy.” Trump also expressed frustration with Ukrainian President Zelenskyy, saying he is “doing his Country no favors by talking the way he does.”
The conflict has become a testing ground for increasingly sophisticated drone warfare. Russia has received Iranian-made drones and is now manufacturing its own version, while Ukraine has developed its own long-range drones.
European leaders are threatening sanctions against Russia, with French President Emmanuel Macron saying that Putin’s actions “show the extent to which President Putin has lied to the Europeans and to the Americans.” The European Union’s top diplomat, Kaja Kallas, also said that the bloc intends to impose more sanctions on Moscow.
The US, UK, and France have delivered longer-range weapons to Ukraine, lifting restrictions on their use. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said that these weapons can now be used to defend military positions in Russia.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that a decision to lift range restrictions is “quite dangerous” and “contrary to our efforts to reach a political settlement.”
