Russia Launches Massive Air Attack on Kyiv

Russia launched a massive air attack on Kyiv on Monday, one of its largest in over three years, causing widespread destruction and killing at least three people. The attack targeted the city’s maternity ward in Odesa, where two women were killed.

The overnight strikes, which followed Russia’s biggest drone assault of the war, were part of intensified bombardments in retaliation for attacks by Ukrainian forces on Russia. The Russian defence ministry confirmed that its forces had attacked military targets in Kyiv with high-precision weapons and drones.

One person died in the attack on Kyiv, while at least four people were treated in hospital after seven districts were hit. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy condemned the attacks, saying they “drown out the efforts of the United States and others around the world to force Russia into peace.”

The US State Department also condemned the strikes, calling for an immediate end to the war. Moscow has intensified its attacks on Ukraine in recent weeks, launching 1,451 drones and 78 missiles over the past seven days.

The attacks have caused significant damage to Saint Sophia Cathedral, a UNESCO world heritage site located in the historic centre of Kyiv, according to Ukrainian Culture Minister Mykola Tochytskyi. Authorities deployed two firefighting helicopters to douse flames from the attack.
