Russia launched a massive air attack on Kyiv, Ukraine’s capital, early Friday morning, with hundreds of drones and around a dozen missiles. The attack comes hours after US President Donald Trump spoke with Russian President Vladimir Putin to urge him to end the conflict.
According to Ukrainian officials, at least one person was killed and 23 people injured in the attack, which was described as one of the most intense nights since the start of the full-scale invasion. Many residents spent the night sheltering in the city’s metro system as smoke from fires burned across the skyline.
The attack began shortly after Trump’s phone call with Putin, during which the Russian leader refused to accept a ceasefire and signaled he would continue the war. Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy described the attacks as “cynical” and said Russia is showing no intention of ending the conflict.
In a subsequent call with Zelenskyy, Trump agreed to work together to strengthen Ukraine’s air defenses, while also offering to help with defense industry capabilities. However, the US has paused deliveries of some key weapons to Ukraine, including air defense missiles, which has raised concerns among Democrats and Republicans about the administration’s commitment to supporting Ukraine.
Russia has increased production of kamikaze drones used in the attacks, and this latest strike follows another record-breaking attack less than a week ago. The aerial assault was intended as a message from the Kremlin following Trump’s call with Putin, according to Zelenskyy.
