Vice President JD Vance announced on Sunday that Russia has made “significant concessions” in talks to end its war with Ukraine. However, he did not rule out imposing more sanctions to pressure the Kremlin toward peace.
Vance stated that the Russians have been willing to be flexible on some of their demands, but they still haven’t met all the conditions for a ceasefire. The US vice president said that Russia has recognized Ukraine’s territorial integrity and acknowledged the need for security guarantees, which are crucial for preventing further Russian aggression.
Despite these concessions, Vance emphasized that more sanctions against Russia are possible if they do not meet certain criteria. He noted that decisions on sanctions will be made on a case-by-case basis to determine what kind of leverage is needed to bring Russia to the negotiating table.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov also spoke about the talks with US lawmakers, stating that he respects President Trump’s commitment to defending American national interests and denies accusations that the Kremlin is “stringing” him along.
