Russia Targets Civilians in Ukraine, Death Toll Reaches 27

Russia launched a wave of attacks on Ukrainian civilians overnight, killing at least 27 people and injuring over 90 others across the country, despite US President Donald Trump’s threat to impose sanctions and tariffs on Russia unless it stops its aggression.

Glide bombs and ballistic missiles struck a prison in Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia region, killing at least 16 inmates. The attack also hit a medical facility, including a maternity hospital, in the Dnipro region of central Ukraine, where three people were killed, including a pregnant woman.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the strikes were “conscious and deliberate” and not accidental. Trump has given Russian President Vladimir Putin 10 days to stop the killing in Ukraine, moving up a 50-day deadline he had given the Russian leader two weeks ago.

The Kremlin remains defiant over Trump’s threats, with former president Dmitry Medvedev warning that each new ultimatum is a threat and a step towards war. Russia has been accused of targeting civilian infrastructure, including prisons and medical facilities, which Ukraine considers a war crime under international conventions.

In addition to the attacks on civilians, Russian forces have continued their grinding war of attrition in eastern Ukraine, slowly churning across the region at a heavy cost in troop losses and military hardware. The conflict has been ongoing for three years, with both sides accusing each other of shelling and targeting civilian areas.

As tensions continue to escalate, Ukraine has launched its own counterattack using long-range drones, hitting oil depots, weapons plants, and disrupting commercial flights. Russia’s air defenses have downed over 70 Ukrainian drones in recent days, but the Ukrainian military remains committed to fighting back against Russian aggression.
