Russia-Ukraine War: 1,037th Day Developments

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine entered its 1,037th day on Friday, with several key developments reported. Ukrainian forces captured an injured North Korean soldier who was fighting for Russia, according to South Korean intelligence. Meanwhile, Russian drones struck a multistorey apartment building in Chasiv Yar, killing two people.

Russian forces also captured the village of Hihant in eastern Ukraine, while the Ukrainian military shot down 20 out of 31 Russian drones launched overnight. The Ukrainian air force carried out a strike on a Russian military-industrial facility in Kamensk-Shakhtinsky, producing solid fuel for ballistic missiles used in attacks on Ukraine.

China’s President Xi Jinping will visit Russia next year, citing joint response to US policy in the Asia Pacific region. Russian President Vladimir Putin discussed a potential Slovakian proposal for peace talks with Ukraine and signed a comprehensive strategic partnership treaty with North Korea.

Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian is set to visit Moscow on January 17 to sign a cooperation agreement. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov expressed willingness to work with the incoming US administration to improve relations, but said Russia would make the first move since dialogue was interrupted after Russia’s invasion began.
