Russia-Ukraine War Enters 1,085th Day With Intensified Fighting

Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine has entered its 1,085th day, with tensions escalating in the capital city. At least one person was killed and four others, including a nine-year-old child, were injured by a Russian missile strike in Kyiv. The strike also caused fires in at least four areas of the city.

Meanwhile, a Ukrainian drone struck a woman’s car in Russia’s Belgorod region, killing her instantly. Ukraine’s military shot down six out of seven ballistic missiles launched by Russia in an overnight attack. However, the Kremlin continued to launch a barrage of 123 attack drones at Kyiv, with only 71 being shot down and 40 likely deterred by electronic countermeasures.

Ukraine retaliated by launching a drone attack on Enerhodar city near the Russian-controlled Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant. The Russian-installed regional governor for the occupied region confirmed that one of the drones hit a car parked about 300 meters from one of the plant’s reactors.

Other developments in the conflict include the arrest of a Ukrainian security official accused of spying for Russia, and the release of a US citizen held in a Russian jail since 2021. The prisoner, Alexander Vinnik, was freed in exchange for Fogel’s release, according to the Kremlin spokesperson.

Politics and diplomacy have also been a focus of attention, with President Trump announcing plans to meet with Putin to discuss a peace deal. However, Zelenskyy has warned that Russia’s recent missile attack on Kyiv proves Putin is not interested in peace. The US Defense Secretary, Pete Hegseth, has also expressed skepticism about Ukraine’s pre-2014 borders being returned to Russia.

The conflict has seen significant military aid pledged by the United Kingdom and the United States. However, the UK’s pledge of £150 million (approximately $186.6 million) is considered insufficient by some, while Trump’s comments on the possibility of a peace deal have raised questions about his intentions.
