Russia’s war on Ukraine entered its 1,157th day on Saturday, with a senior Russian general killed in a car bomb attack in Moscow. Lieutenant General Yaroslav Moskalik, 59, was targeted by an improvised explosive device in his vehicle, resulting in his death.
Russian forces continued their bombardment of Ukraine, striking an apartment building in the southeastern city of Pavlohrad with drones, killing three people and injuring 10 others. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy visited the site of a deadly Russian attack on Kyiv that killed at least 12 people on Thursday.
Zelenskyy reiterated that Ukraine’s position on the Russian-annexed Crimean Peninsula had not changed, stating that the country would not recognize any temporarily occupied territories. The US President Donald Trump said in an interview published Friday that “Crimea will stay with Russia”, increasing pressure on Kyiv to make concessions.
Trump’s envoy Steve Witkoff met with Russian President Vladimir Putin for three hours in Moscow to discuss the US plan to end the war in Ukraine, and a ceasefire agreement was reportedly closer. Zelenskyy suggested he may not attend the funeral of Pope Francis in Rome due to increased Russia attacks on his country.
The conflict continues to escalate, with ongoing fighting and diplomatic efforts to negotiate a settlement. The international community remains engaged in the crisis, with the US and Russian positions on Ukraine drawing closer.
