Russia-Ukraine War Enters 1,260th Day as Tensions Escalate

The conflict between Russia and Ukraine entered its 1,260th day on Thursday, August 7, with fighting intensifying in various parts of the country. Key events include:

Russian artillery shelling in Nikopol killed three people, including an emergency worker, while injuring four others.

Dozens of Russian drones targeted a gas pumping station in southern Ukraine, affecting an LNG imports scheme from the US and Azerbaijan.

Russia struck a gas facility in Ukraine’s Odesa region, reducing Ukraine’s gas reserves to their lowest level in 12 years.

US President Donald Trump said his envoy Steve Witkoff made “great progress” in talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin, although details remain unclear. The US has a better understanding of Moscow’s conditions for ending the war, and the key elements of any agreement are believed to involve territory.

Meanwhile, Ukraine’s Defence Minister Denys Shmyhal thanked the US for approving $200m in deals to supply arms to Ukraine, funded by Kyiv’s allies. Germany is planning to cut state benefits for newly arrived Ukrainian refugees, which could result in 100 euros less per month per refugee.

The situation remains tense, with talks between Putin and Witkoff seen as a crucial step towards resolving the conflict.
