Russia Withdraws Troops from Transnistria Amid Ukraine Invasion

Russia has significantly reduced its troop presence in Transnistria, with estimates suggesting around 1,000-1,500 troops remaining, according to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. This reduction comes as part of a larger withdrawal of Russian forces from the region to aid in Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

In a speech at the Munich Security Conference on February 15, Zelensky stated that there were previously around 5,500-6,000 Russian troops stationed in Transnistria. However, this number has decreased significantly due to Russia’s withdrawal.

The reduced troop presence has led to a change in the role of the remaining Russian forces in Transnistria. Instead of guarding the region, they are now primarily responsible for securing warehouses with weapons.

This development comes as energy security in the region remains uncertain due to the termination of Russian gas transit through Ukraine in January. The European Union had offered financial assistance to Tiraspol, but it was rejected.
