Russian Agents Killed in Ukraine Assassination

Russia claimed that Ukraine orchestrated an assassination, but Ukrainian security agency says otherwise.

Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU) tracked down and killed Russian agents suspected of shooting a senior officer to death in the capital city of Kyiv. The SBU said two bodies were found in the Kyiv region after they resisted arrest.

The agency suspects two Russian agents, a man and a woman, who are believed to have carried out Thursday’s assassination of Colonel Ivan Voronych. Voronych was involved in covert operations in Russia-occupied Ukraine territories.

According to the SBU, the alleged assassins fired five times at Voronych with a silenced pistol. The team had gathered information about his daily schedule and routes before attacking him.

This incident comes amid ongoing tensions between Russia and Ukraine. Russian forces launched 60 drones overnight, shooting down 20 and jamming 20 others. Four civilians were killed and 13 injured in Russian attacks on the Donetsk and Kherson regions since Saturday.

Russia has accused Ukraine of orchestrating high-profile killings of Russian military officials or pro-Kremlin commentators since its invasion in February 2022. However, the SBU denies this claim, saying it is investigating the assassination.

In recent months, other high-profile Russians have been killed in attacks blamed on Ukraine. These include senior Russian generals and a former Ukrainian lawmaker who fled to Russia. The Ukrainian military intelligence warned that “traitors of Ukraine” would face similar fate.

The incident highlights the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, with both sides accusing each other of atrocities. The situation remains volatile, with ongoing clashes and attacks on civilians.
