Russian Attack on Kyiv Kills 15, Injures 156

A devastating overnight Russian missile and drone bombardment of Ukraine has killed 15 people and injured 156, local officials said Tuesday. The main barrage demolished a nine-story Kyiv apartment building in the deadliest attack on the capital this year.

Russia fired over 440 drones and 32 missiles, with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy calling it “one of the most terrifying strikes” on the capital. Ukraine’s Interior Ministry reported 139 injuries, while Mayor Vitalii Klitschko declared Wednesday an official day of mourning.

The attack comes after two rounds of direct peace talks failed to make progress on ending the war, now in its fourth year. Russia has stepped up its aerial attacks, coinciding with a summer offensive on eastern and northeastern sections of the front line.

The intensified long-range strikes have fueled doubts about U.S. policy on the war, with uncertainty surrounding Trump’s refusal to back new sanctions or provide security guarantees for Ukraine. The UK announced new sanctions on Russia’s defense industry and its oil-carrying shadow fleet, while Canada pledged additional funding for Kyiv.

Ukrainian forces responded with their own domestically produced long-range drones, downing 203 Russian drones over several regions. Zelenskyy described Putin as “doing this simply because he can afford to continue the war,” urging world leaders to take action against Russia’s actions.
