Russian Captain Charged in North Sea Collision After Crew Member’s Death

A 59-year-old Russian captain, Vladimir Motin, has been charged with gross negligence manslaughter over the death of a Filipino crew member on board a cargo vessel involved in a North Sea collision. The incident occurred when the Portugal-flagged Solong collided with a U.S. tanker in northeast England. Although not immediately clear where Motin is being held, he is expected to appear in court on Saturday. Extensive searches have confirmed that another crew member, Mark Angelo Pernia, 38, is presumed dead after the collision. The investigation into the incident is ongoing, with authorities saying there is no indication it’s connected to national security.
