Russian Climber Stranded on Kyrgyzstan’s Highest Mountain

A Russian climber, Natalia Nagovitsyna, has been stranded on Kyrgystan’s Victory Peak for nearly two weeks after breaking her leg. Italian climber Luca Sinigaglia died attempting to rescue her. The search for Sinigaglia ended due to severe weather conditions, and all operations have been suspended indefinitely.

Nagovitsyna, 48, was climbing at an altitude of around 23,000 feet when she fell. A drone confirmed she was alive on Tuesday, but there was no sign of life on Thursday. Temperatures are extremely cold, with gusts of wind and snowstorms making rescue operations impossible.

Experts say it’s impossible to evacuate Nagovitsyna manually, only by helicopter, but none are available in Kyrgyzstan. The mountain is the highest in the Tian Shan range, located on the China-Kyrgyzstan border. This incident marks the second time a climber has died attempting to save a stranded partner in Central Asia.
