Russian Cosmonauts Embark on New Spacewalk Mission Today

Two Russian cosmonauts, Alexey Ovchinin and Ivan Vagner, will perform a six-and-a-half hour spacewalk outside the International Space Station (ISS) today, December 19. The mission aims to install a new X-ray detector instrument and update electrical equipment.

The spacewalk is expected to start at 10:10 ET (1310 GMT) with coverage beginning at 9:45 ET (1445 GMT). Ovchinin, wearing red stripes on his Orlan space suit, will perform the EVA for the second time. Vagner, donning blue stripes and venturing into space for the first time, will assist in relocating a control panel for the European Robotic Arm.

The team’s efforts are part of ongoing maintenance to ensure the ISS continues its operations until its scheduled retirement around 2023. The mission marks the 272nd spacewalk performed on the ISS, with this one focusing on installing new equipment and removing older science experiments from the station.
