A deadly explosion in Stavropol killed Zaur Gurtsyev, the city’s deputy mayor, on May 28. Vladimir Vladimirov, governor of Stavropol Krai, confirmed the incident but declined to provide details. Investigators found two men with multiple injuries at the scene.
Multiple Russian Telegram channels identified Gurtsyev as one of the victims and shared footage claiming it was caused by a grenade or IED. Gurstyev participated in Russia’s “Time of Heroes” program and led an operation in Ukraine’s Mariupol in 2022.
Vladimirov hinted at possible Ukrainian involvement but offered no evidence. The incident is under investigation, with Kyiv Independent unable to verify the claims. Ukraine has not commented on the matter, following previous attacks on Russian officials involved in the invasion.
