Russian Forces Hold Back on Pokrovsk Front

Russian forces have not yet reached the outskirts of strategic eastern Ukrainian city Pokrovsk, despite months of fighting, a Ukrainian military spokesperson said. The area has been dubbed a “fortress” settlement due to its key role in Ukrainian defenses and logistics hub.

Moscow’s efforts to capture Pokrovsk are ongoing, with intense battles reported east of the city. As the US presidential transition nears, both Russia and Ukraine are making last-ditch efforts to secure the strongest negotiating position.

Western analysis suggests Russia has made gains south of Pokrovsk in recent weeks, advancing at its fastest pace since 2022. However, sustaining this momentum in residential areas is uncertain.

Russia’s struggles to move westward through Chasiv Yar for over a year and half have raised concerns. Some reports indicate Russia may have captured Kurakhove, but this remains disputed.

Ukrainian officials claim there are “no urban battles” in Pokrovsk, with Russian forces instead focusing on encircling the area. Moscow’s use of drones to attack around Pokrovsk is seen as a strategic attempt to bypass the city.

Experts predict Russia’s advances will slow as they approach Pokrovsk, facing more residential and built-up areas. Despite this, ongoing support from the US will likely continue in eastern Ukraine.
