Russian Spy Killed in Moscow Explosion

A man accused by Ukraine’s secret services of orchestrating assassinations in Kyiv has been killed in an explosion in Moscow, according to Russian state news agencies on Monday. The victim, identified as Armen Gorlovsky, also known as Sargsyan, was the head of the breakaway Donetsk People’s Republic’s Boxing Federation and a founder of a paramilitary unit fighting in eastern Ukraine.

Gorlovsky had been accused by Ukraine’s intelligence services, the SBU, of being a “criminal authority from Donetsk region … cooperating with the FSB,” Russia’s spy service. The SBU had also linked him to President Viktor Yanukovych’s inner circle and put him on an international wanted list for organizing murders in central Kyiv.

The explosion occurred at the Scarlet Sails residential complex, injuring at least four people, including a concierge. It is believed that the blast happened as Gorlovsky exited an elevator in the building’s lobby. The incident has raised concerns about Ukraine’s ability to extend its attacks beyond the front lines and into Russian territory.

This is not the first time Ukraine has been accused of orchestrating lethal operations on Russian territory. In recent years, Ukraine has admitted to carrying out car-bomb killings and assassinations, including the 2022 killing of Daria Dugina, daughter of ultranationalist ideologue Alexander Dugin, and the 2023 assassination of pro-war blogger Vladlen Tatarsky in St. Petersburg.
