Indian police have discovered a Russian woman, Nina Kutina, 40, and her two young daughters, aged six and four, living in isolation in a remote forest cave in Karnataka state. The family was found during a routine patrol on July 9, having been living in the cave for over a week.
Kutina claimed she had moved to the cave to meditate by candlelight and worship God. She told police that she worked as a Russian language tutor in Goa before deciding to leave her life behind. The family’s peaceful existence was disrupted when police discovered pictures of Hindu deities on the walls of the cave, which she said showed her love for adventure.
The Russian Embassy has declined comment on the situation. Upon being found, Kutina expressed disappointment with the loss of her “cave home” in a message to friends. Police are now working to repatriate Kutina back to Russia due to visa overstaying issues.
