Russia’s Aerial Attacks Claim 5 Lives in Ukrainian City

A Russian drone strike hit a residential building in the central Ukrainian city of Pryluky overnight, killing five people including the firefighter’s wife, daughter, and baby grandson. The attack also injured nine others.

The victim, Daryna Shygyda, was a police officer who joined the force in 2020 at just 22 years old. Her father, a firefighter, had taught her to help people since she was a child. The family’s grandparents, who live in another part of the house, described Shygyda as strong and sincere.

The attack is one of several Russian strikes on Ukrainian civilians this week, with at least 30 killed and over 150 injured. Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky has called on Western allies to put pressure on Moscow, saying “strength matters” in ending the war. The attack comes as Russia continues to claim it wants peace, despite ongoing aerial attacks on civilians.

The Russian president had spoken with Ukrainian President Zelensky earlier this week and said he would respond to a drone attack on his own air force. Analysts say the campaign is part of a deliberate strategy to create an impression that Russia has the upper hand in the conflict and undermine Ukraine’s morale. The town of Pryluky has declared two days of mourning, with flags to be flown at half-mast and black banners displayed on public buildings.
