Russia’s acting commander of the Black Sea Fleet stated that Ukrainian forces in the Kursk region will be destroyed “soon,” contradicting earlier reports from Russian officials and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who said fighting continues in the area. The situation remains unclear, with both sides denying each other’s claims.
Ukraine’s General Staff confirmed on April 26 that its forces repelled five Russian ground assaults in the Kursk Oblast, while Kyiv’s military source told the Kyiv Independent that Ukrainian units continue to hold territories in the region. The conflict began in August 2024 with a cross-border incursion by Ukraine into Russian territory.
In early March, Russia launched a push to recapture the region, forcing Ukraine to pull back from initially taken territory. Chief of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces Valery Gerasimov recently acknowledged North Korean troops’ involvement in the campaign for the first time.
