Russia’s Drone Wars: First Decoy Made Entirely of Chinese Parts Found

Russia has developed a decoy drone made entirely of Chinese parts, according to Ukraine’s Defense Intelligence Directorate (GUR). The delta-winged weapon is likely used to overwhelm Ukrainian air defenses. GUR found that nearly half of its components come from CUAV Technology, a Chinese company that specializes in open-source unmanned systems technology. This marks the first time a Russian drone has been made entirely of Chinese parts.

The discovery highlights Russia’s growing reliance on China for military technology, particularly artificial intelligence and machine learning. Beijing has provided Russia with AI capabilities for drones like the V2U barrage drone used in the Sumy region, which can autonomously search and select targets using AI. China has also helped extend the range of Russian fiber-optic controlled drones by providing spools allowing them to reach up to 50km.

GUR’s findings come as Russia is increasingly relying on Beijing for technology to challenge the US and its allies. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi recently told the EU that Beijing cannot accept Russia losing its war in Ukraine, suggesting Beijing prefers a prolonged conflict that keeps the US focused on China.
