Russo Brothers Question High-Budget Streaming Model

The Electric State, a new Netflix movie from the Russo brothers, has a reported budget of $320 million – more than double that of some Oscar-winning Best Picture films. The directors, Joe and Anthony Russo, question whether such high spending makes sense for streaming services.

“We ascribe the same algorithmic attention to something we spend a lot of money on as something we spend very little money on,” said Joe Russo in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. “By that model, you should probably just make everything for a medium number.”

However, they don’t think high budgets will disappear entirely. “Logically, it probably doesn’t make a ton of sense to continue spending that way, but I think people still believe in ambition,” Joe Russo added.

Anthony Russo noted that The Electric State is a test case for the streaming model. “We’ll see how this plays, we’ll see what this does for Netflix, and we’ll see where it all goes.” The movie has received mixed reviews, with a 14% Rotten Tomatoes score – although audience scores are higher.

The film follows Millie Bobby Brown’s character as she searches for her missing brother in a post-apocalyptic world. With a star-studded cast and high production values, The Electric State is an expensive experiment that raises questions about the future of high-budget streaming.
