Rwanda and Congo Troops Escalate Conflict in Goma

U.N. officials confirm Rwandan-backed M23 rebels have control of Goma, the largest city in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Fighting has been ongoing for weeks, with Congo troops exchanging fire across the border from Rwanda-supported rebels. This marks a significant escalation in a conflict that has lasted over a decade.

U.N. peacekeeping chief Jean-Pierre Lacroix described the situation as volatile and dangerous, though peacekeepers remain in place. The city, a major hub for displaced people and aid groups since 2012, has been hit hard by the fighting. On Monday, rebels took control of Goma lakeside area, displacing hundreds of thousands.

Civilians suffer as combat spreads to all neighborhoods, with reports ofMaternity hospital being struck, killing and injuring civilians, including newborns and pregnant women. Internet access was cut on Monday, phone service is spotty, and water and electricity were disrupted.

Peacekeepers in Congo are moving non-essential staff to Uganda, as conditions remain dire for civilians caught in the crossfire. The situation remains dire, with the conflict far from over.
