Rwanda has condemned the UK’s sanctions on its government over the conflict with the M23 rebels in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The move, aimed at pressuring Kigali to withdraw Rwandan troops from Congolese territory, is seen as “punitive measures” by Rwanda. The country argues that international sanctions will hinder efforts towards peace and a sustainable political solution.
Rwanda denies providing arms and troops to the M23 rebels, claiming its forces are acting in self-defense against the Congolese army and hostile groups. However, the UK maintains that Kigali’s involvement is clear. Diplomatic sanctions include ending high-level events with Rwanda’s government and limiting trade promotion activities.
The US has also imposed sanctions on a Rwandan minister and senior members of an armed group for their alleged role in the conflict. The UK Foreign Secretary had warned of international repercussions if the escalating conflict was not addressed.
