Rwanda Declares End to Marburg Virus Outbreak After 42 Days

Rwanda has officially declared the end of the Marburg virus outbreak after no new cases were reported for the last 42 days. The outbreak, confirmed on September 27, 2024, resulted in 66 confirmed cases and 15 deaths. Almost 80% of the cases involved health workers who contracted the virus while caring for patients.

The government’s comprehensive response to the outbreak, backed by the World Health Organization (WHO) and partners, was instrumental in curbing its spread. Cases decreased by half between weeks two and three after detection and then dropped by around 90%. WHO praised Rwanda’s leadership, concerted efforts, and strong health system as crucial in addressing the public health emergency.

The deployment of WHO experts, regional first responders, and national mobilization helped enhance the outbreak response. The last confirmed case received negative PCR results on November 7, marking the start of the countdown to declaring the end of the outbreak.

WHO continues to support Rwanda’s Ministry of Health in implementing a holistic care program for those who recovered from Marburg virus disease. The organization also maintains critical measures to detect and respond swiftly to any future flare-ups or new cases.
