Ryan Coogler Brings ‘Sinners’ to Mississippi Town Where Film is Set

Clarksdale, Miss. — Hundreds of people packed into a local auditorium on Thursday to watch the hit film “Sinners,” which tells the story of two brothers returning home to launch a juke joint in 1930s Clarksdale, Mississippi. Director Ryan Coogler made a special appearance at the screening, thanking the community for its support and acknowledging the town’s rich music heritage.

Coogler said the experience changed him, allowing him to learn about his own family’s history and culture. The film stars Michael B. Jordan as twins and blends elements of drama, action, and music. Composers Ludwig Göransson and others who worked on the film attended the screening, alongside actor Miles Canton.

The town, however, lacks a movie theater, making it difficult for locals to see the film about their hometown. Community organizers started a petition to invite the cast and crew to Clarksdale, leading to this special screening. The event was met with excitement from attendees, who praised the film’s representation of Black culture and music.

Community organizer Tyler Yarbrough expressed gratitude towards Coogler and others for “paying homage” to Clarksdale’s rich history. The screening included a Q&A session, where Coogler and other cast members discussed their work on the film. Local theater teacher Brandice Brown Williams praised the event, saying it showed that filmmakers care about Southern culture.
