Director Ryan Coogler breaks out of his comfort zone with his first entirely original work, the horror film Sinners. Known for well-received hits like Fruitvale Station and Creed, as well as Black Panther, Coogler explores a strange and heady piece of horror set in the Jim Crow Deep South during a single evening. The film follows identical twins Michael B. Jordan, who return home after years abroad to find themselves pitted against a coven of vampires. Coogler sees the monsters as a perfect complement to the blues music that emerged from the Mississippi Delta, equating them to essential ingredients in his unique recipe for horror. “Gumbo is spicy,” he explains, highlighting the importance of balance and intensity in creating a compelling narrative.
