Ryan Coogler Thanks Fans for ‘Sinners’ Box Office Success

Director Ryan Coogler expressed his “eternal gratitude” to moviegoers who saw his latest film “Sinners”, a supernatural thriller that surpassed expectations and reached No. 1 at the box office during its opening weekend.

In a note on his X page, Coogler thanked fans for their effort in making it to theaters, acknowledging those who “booked a sitter and carpooled” as well as those who adjusted their work schedules. He also expressed appreciation for viewers who watched the film multiple times, recommended it to others, and shared their enthusiasm on social media.

The film, which stars Michael B. Jordan and Hailee Steinfeld, follows twin brothers opening a juke joint in their Mississippi hometown, only to face paranormal visitors. “Sinners” was released on IMAX and standard screens, shattering industry expectations with $45.6 million in domestic box office sales and over $71 million globally.

Coogler drew inspiration from his own ancestry, which he credits for infusing the film with life and purpose. The movie also made history as the first to use two different aspect ratios and was released simultaneously on IMAX and standard screens.

The director praised the response to the film, stating it had reinvigorated him and others who believe in the power of art. He hopes this success will expand the definition of what a blockbuster is and challenge traditional notions of horror movies and IMAX audiences.
