Ryan Coogler’s ‘Sinners’ Scores $4.7M in Easter Weekend Previews

Ryan Googler’s period vampire film Sinners starring Michael B. Jordan has taken in an impressive $4.7 million in Thursday previews, ahead of its release on Easter weekend. The movie will compete with A Minecraft Movie for top spot at the box office.

Sinners boasts a 97% Rotten Tomatoes critics’ score, making it Ryan Coogler’s highest-rated film to date. The film is produced and co-financed by Legendary and Vertigo, and is being released in an R-rated format. Tracking services predict a $40 million to $45 million opening, while rival studios forecast a higher total of up to $50 million.

Sinners follows Jordan as identical twin entrepreneurs who return to their segregated Mississippi Delta hometown after seven years, with a plan to open a juke joint and encounter unexpected horrors. The film marks Coogler’s first original feature, not based on real-life events or existing IP.

The movie’s success is seen as a defining moment for producer Michael De Luca and Pamela Abdy, who have given filmmakers a relatively wide budget in the past. Sinners cost $90 million to make before marketing, ahead of the $50 budget for Coogler’s Creed.
