London Mayor Sadiq Khan has rejected President Trump’s claims that London wants to adopt Sharia law, calling them “bigoted.” The president made the comments during his address to world leaders at the U.N. General Assembly, stating that London had “changed” under Khan’s leadership and was now seeking to adopt Islamic laws. However, there is no evidence to support this claim, as the UK government does not use Sharia law.
Khan’s office has responded by saying they will not dignify Trump’s comments with a response. Meanwhile, some politicians have come to Khan’s defense, including U.K. Health Secretary Wes Streeting, who stated that Khan is focused on improving London’s transport and safety. The spat between Khan and Trump dates back nearly a decade, with previous criticisms of Trump’s immigration policies.
Despite Trump’s claims, crime rates in London have increased by 31.5% over the past 10 years, but violent crime has only risen by 40%. In fact, London’s homicide rate is lower than in some major U.S. cities, including Washington, D.C.
