The economic toll of the Los Angeles wildfires continues to rise, but performers’ union SAG-AFTRA has taken a step forward with a pledge of $1 million to support its members affected by the disaster. The funds will be donated to the SAG-AFTRA Foundation, which offers emergency financial aid and education services to union members.
The devastating wildfires have burned through tens of thousands of acres in the L.A. area, damaging homes and displacing thousands of residents. Some of SAG-AFTRA’s high-profile members, including Mandy Moore and Paris Hilton, have been among those affected.
According to SAG-AFTRA national executive director Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, the union is committed to supporting its members during this crisis. “The very essence of a labor union is solidarity: that we all work to elevate each other during times of stability, and we’re there for each other in times of crisis,” he said.
In addition to SAG-AFTRA’s pledge, other organizations have also stepped forward with aid, including Disney’s $15 million donation to relief efforts. The CAA Foundation has partnered with Sean Penn’s CORE to launch a fund for L.A. residents affected by the wildfires.
