Mumbai police on January 21 took the accused in the Saif Ali Khan attack case, Mohammed Shariful Islam alias Vijay Das, to the actor’s house in Bandra to recreate the crime scene. The arrest was made after a five-day police custody of the accused, who allegedly committed the crime between 1:33 am and 2:33 am.
The police chose the early morning time for the procedure when it was dark for more accuracy. Islam, a 30-year-old Bangladesh national, had broken into Saif Ali Khan’s apartment on January 16, injured the family’s nanny, and attacked the actor with a knife. The actor underwent surgery and is currently stable.
During the recrimination, the police asked Islam to narrate how he entered the residential society compound, used a ladder to reach the 1st floor, and then took the fire exit staircase and duct shaft to reach Khan’s balcony area. The accused allegedly broke the metal net on the balcony door before hiding in Jehangir’s bathroom.
When Jehangir’s nanny spotted Islam, he allegedly tried to rob them at knife point. A commotion alerted Saif Ali Khan, who came down to the 11th floor and was attacked by Islam six times with a knife. The actor managed to push Islam into Jehangir’s room before escaping to safety.
Islam then escaped through the same route used to enter the house. He later slept in a garden near National College, took a train from Bandra, and went to Dadar before learning that police were after him. He eventually went to Thane, where he was caught on Sunday early morning while hiding in mangroves. The accused has been remanded in five days of police custody.
