The New Orleans Saints have hired former Los Angeles Chargers head coach Brandon Staley as their new defensive coordinator. This move is the third coordinator hire for Saints coach Kellen Moore this week, following hires for offense and special teams.
Staley and his potential offensive coordinator Doug Nussmeier both have ties to Moore, who was his assistant under Dallas Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy from 2019-2022 and also worked with him in Los Angeles. Moore helped the Eagles win Super Bowl LIX last season alongside Nussmeier as quarterbacks coach.
Staley previously coached St Louis Rams defensive coordinator from 2020 before being fired by Chargers general manager Tom Telesco after a poor start to his coaching career. He spent this year as assistant head coach for San Francisco 49ers, and has been considered a potential target for several weeks.
