Saints Hire Former Chargers HC Brandon Staley’s Coaches for 2025 Defense

The New Orleans Saints are gearing up for the 2025 NFL Scouting Combine, hiring former Los Angeles Chargers head coach Brandon Staley as their new defensive coordinator. With most of the current defense coaches leaving since last season, Staley has a clean slate to work with. He’s focusing on strengthening the team at all levels, particularly on the defensive line, linebackers, safeties, and cornerbacks.

Staley is expected to assemble his staff from several candidates, including:

Will Harris, who previously worked under Staley as an assistant coach and had success improving Florida’s defense in 2024. Despite leaving for Miami, he may be more attractive to the Saints due to their local ties.

Ed Donatell, a veteran coach with experience at both pro and college levels, could fill various roles on the team or as a senior assistant.

Eric Henderson, another former Chargers coach under Staley, has coached in Southern California for years but is open to returning to his hometown of New Orleans. He’s a good fit for defensive line coach.

Jay Rodgers, who recently left the Atlanta Falcons, could be the Saints’ new defensive line coach, having held similar roles with Staley and the Chargers.

John Timu, an assistant on Staley’s previous coaching staff, is currently available after being let go by the Falcons. His experience as a former pro linebacker gives him a strong resume for leading a position group.

Mike Nolan, who previously worked with Kellen Moore on the Dallas Cowboys, may be tempted to return to the Saints but has also achieved success as head coach of the UFL’s Michigan Panthers. He could bring valuable influence to Staley’s staff.
