The New Orleans Saints kicked off their 2025 training camp with a short practice on Wednesday morning at their Metairie facility. Rattler took the first spin with the first team offense on Day 1 but will work with the first team again on Thursday. The Saints’ quarterback competition is being closely watched, and daily statistics from 11-on-11 drills will be tracked to evaluate performance.
The quarterbacks posted the following stats: Spencer Rattler (4-4), Tyler Shough (3-5), and Jake Haener (2-3). However, these numbers should be viewed with caution as they may not accurately reflect a quarterback’s overall skillset.
During practice, each quarterback had some snaps they’d like to have back. Head coach Kellen Moore emphasized the importance of seeing how his quarterbacks respond to adversity, rather than simply focusing on stats. The coaches are also interested in observing how the quarterbacks operate within the offense, which will become clearer as training camp progresses and practices become longer.
Rattler performed well during team periods but struggled with a botched shotgun snap on the first play of the final period. Shough had both impressive throws and poor moments, while Haener appeared rusty early on due to an oblique injury that kept him off the field for most of the summer. Despite this, he showed improvement in the seven-on-seven period and made some key throws in the final team practice.
The Saints’ coaching staff will continue to evaluate the quarterbacks throughout training camp, using a combination of stats and game footage to determine who will start at quarterback in the season opener.
