Washington Commanders right guard Sam Cosmi will miss the rest of the postseason after tearing his right ACL in Saturday’s divisional round win over the Detroit Lions. Coach Dan Quinn announced the news on Sunday, saying Cosmi is “really bummed” about the injury.
Cosmi has been a crucial part of the Commanders’ offensive line for several years and started every game this season. He will undergo surgery to repair his knee. Veteran Trent Scott replaced him in Saturday’s 45-31 win over the Lions.
The loss of Cosmi is significant, with Quinn stating that it’s a “big loss” for the team. However, the Commanders have options to fill the gap. Scott has mostly played tackle but was used at guard on the scout team to get more reps. He has started 23 games in his seven-year career and performed well against Cosmi.
Alternatively, veteran Michael Deiter, who has started 35 games at guard and center, could be considered as a replacement. The Commanders will assess matchups to decide who steps in next weekend.
