Apple is set to launch its first OLED MacBook Pro models in 2026, according to a supply chain report from Samsung Display. The company is currently working on the first samples of the displays and expects to be in full production next year.
The report suggests that the OLED MacBook Pro will feature an “old” display technology with more precisely-controllable backlights, replacing the current IPS LCD mini-LED backlighting. This marks a significant upgrade for the MacBook Pro, which has been using older display technology since its last refresh.
Samsung Display’s 8th-generation organic light-emitting diode (OLED) line is expected to be completed in the first half of this year, and will provide the OLED panels needed for Apple’s MacBook Pro. The report estimates that Apple will ship between 3 million and 5 million OLED MacBook Pro units per year.
The launch of the OLED MacBook Pro is seen as a major upgrade for the device, with Apple expected to introduce a “total redesign” featuring a punch-hole webcam instead of a notch, and a thinner and lighter form factor. However, the transition to OLED will also be delayed for the MacBook Air, which is now expected to arrive after 2029.
In contrast to the MacBook Pro, which will receive an advanced Two-Stack Tandem display technology, the MacBook Air is expected to get an older and less sophisticated single-stack display panel. This suggests that Apple may have opted for a more cost-effective approach for its lower-end laptop model.
