Samsung Display has announced that its latest foldable OLED panel can withstand an unprecedented 500,000 folds without losing functionality. This surpasses the previous benchmark of 200,000 folds set by the company.
The test, conducted by Bureau Veritas, a French testing firm, involved folding the screen 500,000 times over 13 days at a temperature of 25°C (77°F). The result proves that foldable OLED is no longer limited by durability issues.
According to Samsung Display’s EVP Hojung Lee, this achievement builds consumer confidence in foldable OLED and marks another milestone for the technology. The company attributes its success to bulletproof glass technology, which has been enhanced with increased Ultra Thin Glass thickness and high-elastic adhesive.
This breakthrough comes as Apple is reportedly working with Samsung Display to manufacture screens for Apple’s first foldable iPhone, set to launch in 2026. However, a recent survey by CNET shows that only 3% of people are willing to buy a foldable phone in the next year, highlighting ongoing skepticism about their practicality.
