Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 Review: A Thin Line Between Upgrade and Overkill

I recently had the chance to show a friend’s old Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 to its upgraded counterpart, the Galaxy Z Fold 7. As we spent time together on the beach, I watched as the phone slipped from his hands and dropped into the sand, serving as a stark reminder of the Z Fold 4’s limitations. The device’s IP48 rating for water resistance wasn’t enough to protect it from the elements.

As I showed him the Galaxy Z Fold 7, he was initially hesitant, recalling my earlier recommendation to wait for the rumored “Fold Ultra.” However, after seeing and holding the new device, his initial skepticism quickly dissipated. The phone’s sleek design, thin profile (4.2mm), and weight made it a joy to hold. He struggled slightly with opening it, but the magnets seemed stronger than those on his Z Fold 4.

During our conversation, we discussed the similarities between the two phones’ protective coverings, as well as their differences in screen size. The Galaxy Z Fold 7 boasts an impressive 8-inch flexible display, significantly larger than its predecessor. Although the device lost support for the S Pen stylus and digitizing label, it offers a more compact 200MP sensor.

As we compared the two devices, my friend was impressed by the phone’s weight and camera capabilities. At 215 grams, the Galaxy Z Fold 7 is indeed lighter than some of its competitors, including the Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra. While the $2,000 price tag may be steep for some, our conversation revealed that for a devoted Z Fold owner, there may be no better upgrade.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 sets a standard for future foldable phones, offering a seamless user experience and impressive features. With its improved design, larger display, and enhanced camera capabilities, it’s clear that Samsung is committed to pushing the boundaries of what’s possible with folding technology.
