Samsung Galaxy Z Fold7 Qi 2.1 Certified with Limitations

Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold7 has received Qi 2.1 certification from the Wireless Power Consortium, but the certification is incomplete and misleading at times. The device only supports the Basic Power Profile (BPP) at 5W, which contradicts the statement that it officially supports Qi 2.1.

Qi 2.1 introduced two new profiles for cases with magnets: Magnetic Cover Power Enhancement (MCPE) and Magnetic Cover Power Magnet (MCPM). However, Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold7 does not support these profiles. The certification page only lists BPP at 5W, which is unlikely to be the case.

The model number “SM-D637U” used for the Galaxy Z Fold7 is different from Samsung’s standard designations. This suggests that the Wireless Power Consortium has a unique system for classifying devices.

It appears that Samsung may adopt a similar strategy as the Galaxy S25 with magnet cases, using the MCPE profile. The certification page indicates that the device is “Coming Soon” and contains a placeholder image, suggesting that more information will be available in the future.

The current support for Qi 2.1 on the Galaxy Z Fold7 seems limited to the Basic Power Profile at 5W. Given the introduction of new profiles like MCPE and MCPM, it’s likely that subsequent models or accessories will provide a more comprehensive experience.
