Samsung has reportedly planned to launch its first dual-foldable phone/tablet hybrid device in the second half of 2024, according to a South Korean report. The device is expected to feature an S-shaped foldable screen, unlike Huawei’s dual-folding phone that folds twice inward.
When fully folded, the phone will resemble a large-screen tablet, while it has a regular phone-like screen when fully unfolded. It’s unclear if the device will have a separate cover screen. Samsung Display will manufacture the foldable screen, and the hinges are being tested by multiple brands, including FineMtech and KH Vatec.
The report suggests that Samsung will not use an under-display camera on its dual-folding device. Manufacturing of less than 300,000 units is expected, which could contribute to a higher price compared to existing foldable phones like the Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition.
Developers have warned that a dual-foldable device will require more parts and special software features to ensure seamless performance across all screen modes. This may result in a premium pricing for Samsung’s upcoming foldable phone.
