Samsung has finally joined the foldable phone revolution, with plans to release a tri-fold model in 2025. The South Korean company has been playing catch-up in the market, allowing Chinese vendors like Huawei and Tecno to take the lead on key features. According to reports, Samsung will adopt a unique “G” folding mechanism, where two lateral thirds of the device fold inward, reducing the risk of accidental damage.
This design change is reportedly driven by durability concerns, following issues with the Mate XT’s ultra-thin Fold alternative. The Mate XT has faced problems with screen durability and was resold for significantly more than its initial price of $3,000. Samsung Display had previously designed a screen compatible with this type of phone, known as Flex G screens.
The new tri-fold phone from Samsung will feature a separate cover screen, similar to the Galaxy Z Fold series. It’s expected to have dimensions of 12.4 inches when fully unfolded or 10.5 inches when only the left side is exposed. While the details are still scarce, it’s clear that Samsung aims to bring its spin to the tri-fold foldable phone market.
Interestingly, the report suggests that Samsung will produce a limited number of units, under 300,000, which may prevent global releases given the company’s history with slim variants like the Galaxy Z Fold SE.
