Samsung Unveils World’s First 500Hz OLED Gaming Monitor Lineup

Samsung has announced its new Odyssey G-series gaming monitors, featuring a world-first OLED panel with a 500Hz refresh rate. The high-performance monitors are designed to cater to the growing demands of gamers and enthusiasts.

The two new models, Odyssey G6 and G8, boast near-instantaneous response times of 0.03ms thanks to OLED technology. They also feature AMD’s adaptive refresh rate tech (G-Sync Compatible) and HDR 400 True Black, providing an immersive gaming experience with support for HDR content.

However, the key differentiator is Samsung’s claim that it has created the world’s first 500Hz OLED monitor, making it the fastest refresh rate available. The G6 model features a lower resolution of 1440p compared to its 4k counterpart, the G8, but offers more than twice the refresh rate.

Samsung’s new lineup also includes a 3D-focused display, Odyssey 3D G90XF, which achieves 3D effects without glasses using lenticular lenses and AI processing. Additionally, a Smart Monitor M9 has been introduced, boasting “industry-first” AI features that enhance entertainment and interactivity through smart search functions and adaptation.

The monitor’s AI Picture Optimizer analyzes input signals to optimize display settings for the best visual experience, while AI Upscaling Pro uses neural networks to upscale lower-resolution content to 4k quality. The ViewFinity S8 S80UD is another addition to the lineup, a productivity-optimized monitor with a large 37-inch IPS panel and built-in KVM switch.

As the industry continues to push for higher refresh rates, concerns about diminishing returns and connectivity requirements are raised. The introduction of new technologies like DP 2.0 and UHBR 20 certification may address these issues, but it remains to be seen how they will impact the gaming experience.

In a related note, a review of Samsung’s smart monitor with native 1440p upscaled to 4k is suggested, pitting its scaler technology against Nvidia DLSS and other competitors. While some argue that human reactions can’t accurately detect the difference between low refresh rates, others believe that the pursuit of information delivery speed is crucial for gaming performance.
