Samsung’s New One UI 8.5 Brings Security Advancements and Controversial Features

Samsung has released its long-awaited One UI 8.5 beta for the Galaxy S25, promising new ways to create, connect, and stay safe. The latest version of Samsung’s Android-wrap is designed to be more secure than ever, with two notable security features: Enhanced Theft Protection and Auto Blocker.

The enhanced theft protection feature automatically locks the screen after multiple failed attempts to verify identity using fingerprint, PIN, or password. This adds an extra layer of protection for users’ devices and settings.

However, this update also includes a new feature that allows users to temporarily disable Auto Blocker’s security protections, which can be problematic. The Auto Blocker prevents unauthorized app installations and blocks malicious activity, but its default setting is Maximum Restrictions, which may restrict sideloading on Android devices.

Sideloading has been a contentious issue in the Android community, with Google’s latest update (Android 16) introducing Advanced Protection, a “lite” version of Apple’s Lockdown Mode. This feature aims to add iPhone-like protections to Android devices, but it can be challenging for everyday users to navigate and may pose risks.

Given the escalating threats of malware and social engineering tactics, experts advise against sideloading unless under exceptional circumstances. Users are advised to stop using the new One UI 8.5 update or wait until they’re more familiar with its features before proceeding.
