A San Antonio-area charter school has admitted that a case of measles reported earlier was actually rubella. The Legacy Traditional School – Cibolo initially said it had confirmed a measles case in a first-grade classroom, but later clarified the illness was indeed rubella. State officials have not confirmed either type of illness at the school.
The school’s management company said the case was rubella after further investigation. Rubella is sometimes referred to as German measles, but it poses a risk to pregnant women and can cause miscarriage or stillbirth. Children are typically vaccinated against rubella, measles, and mumps with the MMR vaccine.
Despite the correction, the school will remain open on Friday and undergo thorough sanitization as an added precaution. State health officials have not confirmed any measles cases in the area and warn that just being tested for measles doesn’t mean someone has it. The vaccination rate of the affected individual is unknown.
The incident highlights concerns over low vaccination rates among San Antonio schools, with many below the required threshold of 95% to prevent measles spread. Texas requires school-aged children to be vaccinated against measles, but exemptions are available for medical and conscientious reasons.
