The San Antonio Spurs are not contenders yet, but they’re taking a step in the right direction with their young and talented roster. Recently, they signed De’Aaron Fox to a four-year contract extension, which will keep him in San Antonio for the foreseeable future.
However, despite having a plethora of young players, the Spurs still need to figure out their crowded backcourt and make moves to complement their phenomenal center, Wembanyama. The team’s goal is not to win a Larry O’Brien trophy just yet, but rather to establish themselves as a top-six seed in the Western Conference.
While it’s unlikely they’ll be competing with the likes of the Nuggets, Rockets, Timberwolves, and Lakers this season, there’s still plenty of long-term optimism for San Antonio. The team has a young crop of budding prospects that can reach All-Star heights and an interesting young coach who learned from one of the best in Gregg Popovich.
The Spurs made significant improvements last season, going 34-48, and are expected to see a massive upgrade this year. They should finally make a return to the NBA Playoffs or at least the play-in tournament. While it’s not the championship they’re aiming for, the Spurs’ future looks bright with their young talent and new coach at the helm.
The San Antonio Spurs may not be contenders just yet, but they’re taking the right steps towards building a winning team in the years to come.
