The 68th San Francisco International Film Festival is set to run from April 17-27, showcasing over 150 films from more than 50 countries in the Bay Area and beyond. This year’s lineup includes a focus on LGBTQ-related films, with six queer narrative features, including the closing night feature “Outerlands.”
The festival highlights the work of emerging talent, such as writer-director Joonho Park, who made a strong debut with his feature film “3670,” exploring themes of identity and community among North Korean defectors. Another standout is Vietnamese filmmaker Tran Anh Hung’s hypnotic “Viet and Nam,” which delves into the complexities of trauma, grief, and human connection.
Other notable films include “The Last First Time” from Mexico, following a young man’s exploration of his sexuality in Guadalajara, and “Cactus Pears” from India, a poignant coming-of-age story about reconnecting with childhood love. The festival also includes the National Geographic documentary “Sally,” which tells the story of American astronaut Sally Ride, the first woman to fly in space.
The San Francisco International Film Festival is a celebration of the Bay Area’s revitalization and its thriving arts and culture scene. With its diverse lineup of films and filmmakers, this year’s festival promises to be an exciting and unforgettable experience for film enthusiasts and newcomers alike.
