The San Francisco Night Ministry, renowned for its outreach to people experiencing homelessness in the Tenderloin, marked a milestone 60 years of service on November 1. The organization, founded by the San Francisco Council of Churches, has been providing spiritual care and essential services to around 10,000 individuals annually, with approximately 40% identifying as LGBTQ.
The Night Ministry’s mission is built upon deep listening and compassion, connecting people to their own spiritual resources during difficult times. Executive Director Reverend Trent Thornley emphasized the importance of extending witness and compassion to marginalized communities, particularly in light of recent election challenges.
Throughout its history, the Night Ministry has played a significant role in San Francisco’s LGBTQ community, offering inclusive worship services, drag shows, and community programs. Notable supporters include Phyllis Lyon and Del Martin, who provided early backing for the organization.
The 60th anniversary celebration featured a drag show at Aunt Charlie’s Lounge and marked several notable recognitions, including the induction of Lutheran Bishop Jeff Johnson into the Order of Church Ladies for Queer Rights. The Night Ministry continues to serve the community through its care hotline (415) 441-0123 and website (sfnightministry.org).
